Nice little puzzle. 8x8s feel weird, which is an unusual sort of challenge, considering it's a smaller grid.

I agree with Snaques that the X-sums rule is written awkwardly. I think I usually see it like:
"X-sums: Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of the first X cells in that direction of the row/column, where X is the number in the cell adjacent to the clue. e.g. "(8) 3 1 4"

I would think that the X-sums indicate the sum of N first digits from the clue, but I just can't make sense of this rule:
"the clue represents the number of cells N across from it"

Ho can the clue 20 represent 20 cells across anything in this puzzle?
