Rank Up 20.gdc - A Colonel Of Truth
(Published on 7. October 2025, 12:26 by gdc)
My entry for the 20 puzzles anniversary of the Rank Up series by ThePedallingPianist. An exmple is available below. Hope you enjoy!
Latin Square. Place the digits 1-5 once in every row and column.
Circles outside the grid must be filled with (1 or 2 digit) numbers that act simultaneously as "Full Rank" clues and "Up To N-Sums" clues. If two ranks are tied, the "Up To N-Sums" clue may match any of those ranks.
Full Rank: A value in an external cell represents the rank of the number formed by reading the digits in that row or column from that direction, where (1) is the lowest such row or column and (20) is the highest.
Up To N-Sums: A circled (1 or 2 digit) number outside the Row or Column N indicates the sum of all digits up to the cell that contains the digit N. (The digit N itself is not included in the sum.)
Rules
Example
A 4x4 example grid. Unclued outside cells show the ranks of their row/column. The arrows show the "Up To N-Sums" that match up with the rank. For example, summing all digits up to but not including 1 in row 1 will give a sum of 6. The rank for that row from the left is tied for 6 and 7. In the 5x5, not all circles are necessarily given, but in the example they are all given.
Solution code: Bottom row (row 5) left to right (5 digits).
