Step Sums

(Published on 29. September 2025, 05:00 by Sotehr)

PUZZLE

RULES

Sudoku: Normal Sudoku rules apply; place the digits 1-9 once in every row, column, and 3x3 box.

Periodic Sums: A clue outside the grid indicates the sum of N and every Nth digit in the row or column, where N is the digit in the first cell seen from the clue. (For example, for the 19 clue, if r6c1 is 4, then r6c1, r6c5, and r6c9 must sum to 19.)

NOTES
Expected Difficulty: 1.5 stars

This is a proof of concept puzzle for a new outside sum clue. I couldn't find any puzzles that have used something similar before, but it's entirely possible it has been.

Many thanks to sujoyku, dibble, Matt Y Ddraig, ChinStrap, NXTMaster, frogfather, and Nicolas Duhail for testing.

Play [Step Sums] on SudokuPad.

Solution code: Box 8, normal reading order.

head twisted around figuring out the constraint. Kept implementing it as the rule where you take the sum of the first N digits where N is the first digit in the column or row. That's on me, not you.
But then again i am not very good at these. ;)
