Full Rank Ranked Cages

(Published on 4. September 2025, 05:06 by Justalilguy)

Rules

  • Place digits 1-9 in each row, column and box without repeats.
  • Full Rank: Rows and columns form 9 digit numbers. The clue just outside the grid is the rank of the 9 digit number read from the direction of the clue with rank 1 being the lowest and rank 36 being the highest 9 digit number.
  • Ranked Cages: Cage sums are ranked from the lowest to the highest with rank 1 being the lowest sum. Clue at the corner of a cage is its rank. Numbers do not repeat in a cage and no two cage sums are the same.

  • Leave the rank cells empty at the end for the solution check to work.

The opening to this was smooth as anything. Got quite bogged down in the middle (due to my own number-blindness), but overall this was a beautiful concept really well executed.

Judging from the presence of that 19 cage AND the 17 cage, "Numbers do not repeat within a cage" seems NOT to include the ranking digits outside the grid - is this a correct assumption?
____
It does include numbers outside as well. Keep in mind the rank cells can have 2 digit numbers.

Great and possibly the most evil puzzle ever. Took me approximately 4.5 (edit after being capable of using a clock again) hours of pure despair with luckily hope and reward in the end. Thank you!

That was the most intricate full rank puzzle I've done recently. I got the correct answer, though I'm not sure my logic was solid throughout the solve. Definitely felt like 5* to me.
