Rules:
- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column, and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.
- Killer cages: Digits in a cage do not repeat and must sum to 21.
Here you can solve the puzzle online:
Solution code: Row 3 from left to right (9 digits in total)

The way you are able to extract such beautifully coordinated symmetry from the killer rule set is quite astounding.

Thank you for your comment, Draxie! I am glad that you enjoyed the symmetry in this set-up.

This was such a fun solve!
Trying to make it simpler I made it so complicated, I had to restart =D I thought it would be simpler than 22 cages, but boy was I wrong…
Thanks so much for this!

for what values can you create a sudoku like this? Which sudokus can be made using only one value for the cage total?
**
That is a good question, samuelsamjo, and the honest answer is: I don't know. I have been told that 36 is impossible which I think is caused by 1 and 2 being indistinguishable. (If I am not mistaken the same should hold true for 9-cages.) There are some obvious totals for which it is impossible. For example, anything below 9 cannot distinguish the high digits. On the other extreme, 44-cages would only allow to place 1s. But if somebody knows the general answer, please write a comment and let us know.

I spent so many hours missing something so simple, I almost drove myself mad :p
Once I realised what I missed, everything worked out instantly. Very nice puzzle, especially if you don't miss the obvious like I did (:
