Sudoku Variants Series (442) - Modular Lines

(Published on 19. September 2025, 06:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a unique Sudoku variant every week.
I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Modular Lines
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Any set of three sequential cells along a modular line must contain a digit from each of the three sets {1,4,7}, {2,5,8} and {3,6,9}, which are residues modulo 3.
Digits may be repeated on lines.

Inspiration for this type comes from FullDeck-Missing.

Solve online in Sudokupad.

Solution code: Column 1

The logic is so delicate and nicely associated, Incredible puzzle!

@Realshaggy: you are absolutely right. The only reason that I included this one in SVS too is that both rulesets are vivid in the portal and seem to exist peaceful next to each other.
The construction process was exactly the same for both puzzles, and so will be the solving process.

I don't see how this is any different than Entropic Lines (SVS420). In my opinion, the difference is much smaller than between Thermo and Greater Than for example.

Huh, I'm kinda surprised you haven't done modular lines yet. Very tricky, had to get real creative with my coloring.

Added sudoku tag. :)

Btw, it also seems like you forgot to tag this as a sudoku, so it's now placed in the no sudokus list. I hope you had a lovely holiday! :)

Thanks! I added it now, albeit not an icon, but only text.
Yeah, I had a good holiday. A bit rainy now and then...

Nice coloring exercise! Smooth path, so I gave 2*. Thank you very much for creating and sharing another lovely SVS-episode.

There was indeed a typo in the solution code. I must have been in a hurry uploading this one just before I went on holiday two weeks ago. Sorry for that.
Now it should work fine, so everyone who solved it already can now enter the code. :)

Changed typo in the solution code.
Apologies!

Solution code not working?
Fun but challenging, very much hoping I haven't made an error somewhere :)
