Befuddlement

(Published on 8. July 2025, 03:01 by Oddlyeven)

Rules: Normal Sudoku rules apply. Put the digits 1 to 9 once each into every row, column and box.
Dynamic Fog: The grid is covered in fog. Placing a correct digit will remove the fog from its cell and possibly other cells in the grid.
Doublers: One cell in each row, column and box is a doubler. The value of a doubler cell is equal to twice its digit. Each of the digits from 1 to 9 appears in a doubler cell.
Uniqueness: On each of the constraints below, values do not repeat anywhere in the puzzle. For example, if there is a 2 on a parity line, 2 or double 1 can't appear anywhere else on a parity line, but double 2 could because it has a value of 4.
Whispers: Adjacent values on a thin green line differ by at least 5.
Renban: Values on a thick purple line form a set of consecutive numbers with no repeats.
Parity: Adjacent values on a hollow red line must alternate between odd and even.
High: A value on an orange circle must be greater than 5.
Low: A value on a blue square must be lower than 5.

Amazing puzzle. The constraints play so well with each other. This is my first encounter with the uniqueness rule - It is used beautifully in this puzzle. I love it :)

Thanks for setting the puzzle :)

This might be one of the nicest (yet intricate) fog puzzles I've solved so far, and I've solved plenty of fog puzzles too. x)

Every part felt so precise and cleverly crafted that I actually had to stop for a while to think of some of the steps in the middle, and every constraint had their own remarkable moments there!

Brilliant puzzle! Beautiful deductions all the way.

That had a very nice flow! The doublers reinvigorate some of these constraints. It's not just turning a crank anymore; you have to actually use your brain.

Don’t make the mistake I made and get befuddled by the orange circles. They are NOT supposed to be odd values… once I caught that error, the solve continued to be a very pleasant journey around the grid. Great stuff, beautiful puzzle.

That was tough, took over 45 minutes and was a struggle. Over my pay grade sudoku-wise! The puzzle is aptly named!

Great puzzle. Absolutely fantastic. Maybe I just got lucky by asking the right questions at the right time, but I thought it was closer to 3* difficulty.

Beautifully crafted, lots of mindblowing interactions cause of the uniqueness and a very fair but challenging puzzle overall. A real gem.
