Foggy Parindromes

(Published on 30. June 2025, 06:30 by microwavable)

Hi!

Welcome to my first real sudoku!

I've played around with setting before but only using the tools on websites and never focusing on flow or the player experience.

I really wanted to change that so I decided I'd try to make a puzzle using dynamic fog - and this is it!

I hope you enjoy and please leave any thoughts or suggestions in the comments:)

Rules:

SUDOKU: Normal Sudoku rules apply. (place the digits 1-9 in each row, column, and box)

PARITY: Digits in adjacent cells on a red parity line must alternate between even and odd.

PALINDROME: On a grey palindrome line, cells equidistant from the center of the line must contain the same digit.

(The center of a palindrome line will be denoted by a grey square, if given)

KILLER: Digits in dotted killer cages may not repeat and must sum to the number in the top left corner.

XV: All cells joined by an X must contain digits that sum to 10. All cells joined by a V must contain digits that sum to 5.

(ALL Xs and Vs are given)

DYNAMIC FOG: In addition, the grid is partially covered with fog. Placing correct digits may uncover new areas and clues.

Play here!

Solution code: Will be given upon completion in SudokuPad:)

Good stuff. Didn’t help myself by missing the negative constraint for 10 minutes!

I liked the puzzle, I just got extremely confused by the rule about the "palindrome square" as the link in the German version does not contain such a square, which made me believe that r3c3 could *not* be the middle of the palindrome.

I'd be grateful if you could fix that. :) Otherwise, as I said, nice puzzle.

A grey square usually (in my experience) indicates an even digit. The setter is entitled to specify a different meaning but using a less misleading symbol (perhaps a grey triangle) would help avoid this confusion.

Square being in middle of palindrome wasn’t totally obvious

are you supposed to just GUESS that r3c3 is the middle of a palindrome ? (*)

there seems to be no valid theoretical or practical reason to do so.

incidentally, the 13 cage is redundant. ditto for the box 3 cage

(*) in the position where 10 digits, plus many candidates, have been obtained.

I agree with the r3c3 comment from Crusader175, you can guess that it is probably the case you technically it might not be.

Very fun puzzle though!

addressed ambiguity with a palindrome line
(thank you for pointing it out to me!)
