Sudoku Variants Series (425) - Up to N

(Published on 23. May 2025, 12:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a unique Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Logic solvable
Like all of my sudoku variants, this puzzle can be solved by logic alone. Guessing is not required and also no sophisticated solving techniques are necessary; just plain and easy sudoku steps and of course the intrinsic logic this specific variant has to offer. In case you don't find that logic or get stuck, feel free to ask for a hint in the comments below this puzzle and I'll be happy to help you.

Up to N
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of all digits up to the cell that contains the index number of the relevant row or column. The index number itself is not included in the sum. Index numbers are written in grey for your convenience.

Inspiration for this type comes from sujoyku. (Up to N and It's Odd Outside)

Solve online in Sudokupad.

Solution code: Column 9.

I wonder, would including the 3 missing sums change much about the solve? They're clearly not necessary, but it makes me think of a recent puzzle on MissingDeck where revealing a specific cell drastically drops the difficulty for inexperienced solvers.

Very nice. 18 mins for me. I can understand why some would review it as a 2/5 though.

Some players commented that they needed to guess at the end.
Like always in my sudokus, that is not necessary. So for learning purposes, I have written the complete solve path in a hidden comment to this puzzle.

This was great. I had to make some lists on my notepad of possible combinations and eliminate them but thats often how i solve puzzles and I like it. Thanks!

Thank you for this wonderful puzzle, Richard! I also had a tough time with the ending. It would be interesting to know what your intended deductions for the rightmost columns were. If it is not asking too much, I would very much appreciate a hidden comment on that. :)
Thanks again for including "Up to N" in your variant series!

Reply: thanks for the kind words sujoyku!
Since I don't know how far you came with logic, hence: where to start with explaining the logic in 'the rightmost columns', I have written the complete walkthrough in a hidden comment now. Hope that helps! :)

Wonderful puzzle - as always, but the last two sums… Couldn’t find out what I missed there. Thank you very much for creating and sharing.
