Unpuzzles

(Published on 15. April 2025, 21:43 by AnalyticalNinja )

I recently participated in a puzzle setting competition where we were tasked with making something that only gave solvers a 1x4 area of cells to input a solution into. My creation didn't quite meet the spirit of the prompt, but I'm still very proud of it so I wanted to share it here. I hope you enjoy it!

Unpuzzles
For each of the four incomplete 6x6 puzzles below, you must find the one additional clue that will make that puzzle unique. A pdf with the set of puzzles can be viewed here.

I will include links to penpa grids with solution checks for the four puzzles so you can know if you've indeed found the correct solution.
Tapa.
Masyu.
Meidjuluk.
Fillomino.

And finally, here is an example Spiral Galaxy Unpuzzle to illustrate how some of the logic might work in these. The logical steps are explained in greater detail in the PDF if you'd like to see the explanations.

Solution code: The 5 character solutions for each of the puzzles in the order: Tapa, Masyu, Meidjuluk, Fillomino (20 characters total)

I absolutely love these type of puzzles. They are a must for anyone who loves solving and setting, as they exercise both halves of the puzzling brain at the same time. They would also be great for anyone thinking about getting into setting, but apprehensive about where to start.

Amazing! The Masyu and Meidjuluk were quite easy for me, but I struggled a bit with the other two puzzles

Very interesting to think this way :). For Masyu I discovered such a puzzle under the name Meta Masyu (maybe in a championship) many years ago and made this one: https://logic-masters.de/Raetselportal/Raetsel/zeigen.php?id=0000K6

- Very cool, I'm happy to see that others have explored this space a bit as well! Admittedly my Masyu was probably even easier than yours, but I think the other 3 were hopefully tricky enough to make up for it. XD

Very enjoyable, thanks! Fun combination of solving and setting :-)

- Thank you very much! I'm really glad you enjoyed them. That's such a good way to describe them too, because so much of the setting process is looking at all the possible implications of adding just one more clue. :)

This was one of my favourite [set of] puzzles from Round 4 of the League. The only complaint is that there weren't more and more of them.

- Thank you so much! With how much incredible creativity came out of turn 4 of The Skunkworks League that is a tremendous compliment!!! I may just need to try and see what sorts of nonsense I can get up to with this idea in a larger grid and other puzzle types. I actually found the process of making these much more satisfying than I probably should've considering all the possibilities I had to consider. Lol
