Positive Negativity 4

(Published on 25. March 2025, 05:49 by The Bard)

Normal Sudoku rules apply, place the digits 1-9 in each row, column, and box.

Yin Yang: shade some cells so that all shaded and unshaded cells form 2 orthogonally connected areas such that no 2x2 area is entirely shaded or unshaded, and all the digits values in the shaded area are negative values.

German Whispers: Adjacent digits on a green line must have a difference of at least 5. All horizonal German Whisper lines have been given, i.e. there is a negative constraint, but it only applies to digits horizontally adjacent to each other.

X-Sums: A number outside the grid gives the sum of the first N digits in that row or column, where N is the digit in the cell closest to the given clue. However, the solver must determine if the sum is negative or positive.

It is remarkable that the GR negative constraint was not needed until the final 4 cells (although I imagine it might have been a little easier if I had not totally forgotten about that rule)

Very nice. Thanks.

The solver must ... ? Does he really :-)

~~

Well... sort of. The sets are interchangeable but that is common when dealing with positive and negatives in this manner.
I am glad you liked it.

Bravo, what a brilliant puzzle. Twisted my brain in just the right way. I can echo everyone else’s experience that I also thought I broke it. Thanks for setting.

I thought I broke something at least 5 times, but turned out my brain was the one that was broken

Very nice puzzle. I haven't tried the prequels but I loved the use of the negative GW restriction, both as in "all GW lines are given", and as in negative numbers being used for GW.

I also really liked the last few steps for row 6.
