What Does It Mean?

(Published on 24. March 2025, 22:34 by sujoyku)

I have set this puzzle for Scojo’s Setting Saturday’s prompt in which one should construct a puzzle with Renbans and Region Sum Lines. I like to thank all testers and wish you joyful solving!

- Normal Sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column, and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Renban: Each purple line must contain a set of consecutive non-repeating digits in any order.

- Region Sum Lines: Box borders divide the blue lines into segments with the same sum. (Different lines may have different sums.)

Here you can solve the puzzle online:

Solution code: Row 9 from left to right (9 digits in total)

Incredibly intricate! The break-in had me constantly thinking “there’s just not enough information here…” but there was the perfect amount!

**
Thank you for your comment, Nordy! It made me smile because I had such a similar experience when setting the puzzle. I had the break-in idea, experimented with additional clues and at first was astonished that this set-up entirely solves. I am glad you liked the puzzle.

Solve Time: 24:13

I rated this 3/5 difficulty.

Great puzzle with some very nice geometry! I really liked how the two variant rules (RSL/Renban) worked together, and the break-in was excellent.

This puzzle was definitely a bit tricky (especially in the early phases), and felt around 3* difficulty overall. I think it falls slightly in the easier-average 3* range, and my time was a bit quicker than normal for 3* puzzles (though I think this is a result of me trying to "speed solve", and I managed to quickly spot the restrictions). The logic itself definitely felt harder than that of a 2* difficulty puzzle, though - which, depsite my fairly quick time, was a major factor in my 3* rating.

The break-in was a bit tricky, but was very cool and definitely my favorite aspect of the puzzle. It utilized several wonderful geometric ideas that were very creative and fun to unravel. The subsequent midgame phase was also excellent and very well-designed/constructed. The logic was very engaging, and my solve path flowed very nicely between the given clues/lines right up until I had reduced the puzzle to basically just classic sudoku logic.

Overall great puzzle, thanks for sharing!

You are much welcome, TheNineElements, thank you for your detailed feedback! I can relate with what you are saying. It is good to hear you enjoyed the break-in and liked the geometric implications.
