Double Take? (Quad Entropic, Quad Whisper)

(Published on 23. March 2025, 06:00 by tallcat)

So good you have to solve it twice? Maybe? I have had the vague ambition to do a duplicate line puzzle with different constraints for a while, but I could never really get anything I wanted to work with. This duo came about somewhat by chance as I was almost done with the process of setting the first when I realized I had the opportunity to repeat it. It took some effort to make sure each puzzle were enjoyable in their own right, but I am pleased with the result. Happy solving!

Both puzzles

Normal sudoku rules apply

Quadruples: Digits in white circles must be present at least once in the cells the clue touches.

Puzzle A
Entropic Lines: Any set of three sequential cells along orange lines must contain a low (1-3), medium (4-6), and high (7-9) digit. Digits may repeat on a line if allowed by other rules.

Can be played online at f-puzzles and Sudokupad

Puzzle B
German Whispers: Adjacent cells on green lines must differ by at least 5. Digits can repeat on lines if allowed by other rules

Can be played online at f-puzzles and Sudokupad

Solution code: Row 8 of puzzle A and row 8 of puzzle B (left to right, 18 digits, no spaces)

Both sweet and engaging puzzles with some fascinating deductions in each of them!
The GW one was a bit more challenging to scan, but proper notations helped me seeing certain logic clearer at some points. :)

Found the German Whispers one brutal oddly, despite being more restricted. Excellent work

Very fun, very beautiful! Works different corners of my brain in a rhyming sort of way. Quite cool to experience!

Cleverly placed quads, thanks!

I loved the entropic puzzle. I loved the German Whispers puzzle too, but that love was unrequited and I found it really difficult. Overall, though, a great way to spend a lazy hour on Sunday morning :)

I normally prefer German Whispers but I found the Entropic Lines much more interesting. Thank you for a split duality puzzle pack.

Both great puzzles with interesting logic, the 89% rating has me scratching my head a bit, definitely not an indication of the quality of these. Although personally i'd say this is 3 star difficulty
