Balanced Sudoku #04: Absolute Value

(Published on 14. December 2024, 01:47 by Nell Gwyn)

  • Balanced Sudoku: Place the numbers -4 to 4 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.
  • Between or Double: Each line with circles on the end is either a Between Line (meaning, the numbers on the line must be strictly between the numbers on the circles) OR a Double Arrow (meaning, the numbers on the line must have the same sum as the numbers in the circles), but cannot be both.
  • Region Sum lines: Box borders divide each blue line into segments. For each blue line, all of its segments must have the same sum (different lines may have different sums).
  • Zipper lines: On a purple line, each pair of numbers equidistant from the center dot must sum to the number in that dot.
  • Ten Lines: Each gray line must be divided into one or more non-overlapping groups of numbers that sum to (positive) ten.
  • (Partial) Kropki: Cells separated by a white dot are consecutive, cells separated by a black dot have a 1:2 ratio. Not all dots are given.

Solution code: Row 3, with minus signs (-) in front of negative numbers (e.g. -1-3210-44-23).

Great puzzle! I ended up using 1-9 for digits for the break-in to help wrap my head around it and for notation purposes, and then I subtracted 5 halfway through. Had to do some extra math to keep everything straight but worked out better for me.

Lots of extremely fun ideas within the puzzle tho! Never felt unfair

I have never been more confused while solving a puzzle! Took me a while to wrap my head around the balanced rule. Brilliant from start to finish, more people need to see this.

I confess I did cheat to get a start, I just didn't want to spend too much time trying. Don't know if I would have seen a break in after a longer while. But then it was quite a challenging and nice experience.
