Goblin (Modular Lines Kropki)

(Published on 23. November 2024, 17:29 by tallcat)

Continuing to alternate somewhat easier puzzles with trickier fare, this one is my first try at using modular lines as a constraint. As always, i tried to do something interesting while keeping an approachable solve path. I also didn't set out with the intent to make a 'Goblin' face in the grid, but was not going to pass up the title. Happy solving!

Normal sudoku rules apply

Modular Lines: Any set of three adjacent digits along a modular line has three different remainders when divided by 3. (i.e. must come from the groups 147, 258, 369)

Kropki Pairs: For cells separated by a black dot, one value is double the other. Cells separated by a white dot are consecutive. Not all dots are necessarily given.

Solution code: Row 2 (left to right). 9 digits, no spaces

Not sure I would describe this as approachable but it is very clever, excellent use of modular lines.

I used to think modular lines were just a less interesting variant of entropic lines, but this puzzle convinced me otherwise! I loved how the solve path used uniquely modular properties. Great puzzle!

Beautiful puzzle! Thought I was stumped for a minute there but then saw the way forward. Really nice break-in at the beginning and again in the middle. Thanks for sharing!

A bit tricky to scan in the middle, but lots of interesting interactions in this one :)
