Projected Differences

(Published on 7. June 2024, 23:07 by ThePedallingPianist)

What?! Surely not... You really mean to say that... ThePedallingPianist made a somewhat approachable puzzle?!

Many thanks to my dad for help with testing, and to Justin V, ViKingPrime and Marty Sears for help with rule wording.

X Sudoku: Place digits from 1-9 in every cell such that digits do not repeat in a row, column, box or along a marked blue diagonal.

Projected Differences: A diamond clue shows that there exist two digits N steps away from the diamond in an orthogonal direction that have a difference of N, where N is the digit in the diamond. Not all diamonds are necessarily given.

(For example, if r6c4 is a 3, then at least one pair of digits from the set of digits in r3c4, r6c7, r9c4 and r6c1 must have a difference of 3)

Solution code: Row 5, left to right

Loved this. Really nice straightforward idea, but it led to some very fresh logic and fun deductions. Lovely flow but still definitely a challenge.

Very elegant! Appreciate the minimalist rules on this one. Had to step away and come back to it after the initial few deductions, but I got there in the end.

Great rule - I can already imagine the headaches a complex puzzle would use this for haha.
But this was smooth like peanut butter (without chunks)

Awesome new rule, and a phenomenal way to show it off, connecting it with the diagonal lines. Very sweet indeed.

This is such a lovely puzzle and quite approachable.

It's smooth as butter if you have the right mindset but can be easy to overthink; if you get a bit stuck for a moment like I did, take a step back and relax. Take a breath, grab a drink and come back with a fresh set of eyes.
