Dutch Flat Mates: Classic

(Published on 18. October 2023, 11:30 by Flinty)

Special Thanks
Thank you for checking out puzzle Number One in the series. After puzzle #100 was released, I came back here and did t a little housekeeping.

Dutch Flat Mate Puzzles
This is where it started on '18 Oct 23'. I updated this puzzle on 10 Sep 25, by improving the rules and removing 6 redundant givens that make the puzzle fairly trivial. Here is a spreadsheet link for all the puzzles in the series, which also has a few teasers for upcoming constraints/guest setters in the series (subject to change).

This alternative link offers a limited LMD search for Dutch Flat Mates.

*The original puzzle contains badly worded rules and 6 extra givens.

Initial Setter Difficulty: 1.5 / 5

Normal Sudoku rules apply
Place the digits 1-9 so that they do not repeat in any row, column, or 3x3 box.

Dutch Flats
Every 5 in the grid must have a '1' directly above it or a '9' directly below it. It may have both, but it doesn't need both.

Solution code: Row 5 (from left to right)

I have removed 6 given digits, and carried out some housekeeping on the rules and LMD page. The original puzzle is still available.

Interesting new ruleset! Tomorrow's SVS is my take on it. :)

I'm also a bit surprised this isn't a bit higher rated, it's definitely a simple 1-star puzzle but most 1-star puzzles on LMD are snack-sized or so simple there's not a ton of interesting logic in them, this actually made me think a bit while still staying simple. Nicely done!

I'm a little surprised at the rating, I quite like this constraint. It's subtle but meaningful, easy to grasp and comes with a lot of implications for other constraints - looking forward to the rest of the series.
