Dutch Flat Mates (German Whispers)

(Published on 1. November 2023, 11:30 by Flinty)

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

5's live in Dutch Flats
All 5's in the grid must strictly have EITHER; a '1' directly above it AND/OR a '9' directly below it. It may have both, but it doesn't need both.
Examples provided below on an empty grid.

German Whisper Lines
Two cells connected by a green, German whisper, line must have a difference of at least 5.

This will be a weekly series for as long as my brain allows:
Dutch Flat Mates 1: Classic
Dutch Flat Mates 2: Thermometers
Dutch Flat Mates 3: German Whispers
Dutch Flat Mates 4: Region Sum Lines (8 Nov)

Solution code: All the digits in Row 3.

Put the GWL and DFM ruleset together, and the result is an approachable, fun and very nice puzzle with a satisfying break-in and a good, smooth flow. Thanks, Flinty! :)

I felt like such a genius getting past the final big obstacle (having to do with partially exclusive pairs).

So... I've been going through the list of your DFM puzzles, and I have been getting absolutely stomped by them. Just... so crazy stuck. Then I finally re-read the rules. I didn't realize that the 1 HAD to be over the 5 and the 9 HAD to be under the 5. I assumed they could appear in either position. Friends... don't be like me. READ THE RULES!!

But in all seriousness, this puzzle was a joy, and I'm excited to go back to the others. I assume I will be more successful now.

Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for this fun puzzle, Flinty! I was a little stuck and then noticed I had missed a deduction based on the Dutch flats constraint. After that the solve kept nicely flowing. Thank you for setting and sharing!
