Thermo Arrow

(Published on 25. March 2023, 21:42 by bigger)

This puzzle doesn’t have a link, feel free to skip my puzzle, you won’t miss anything.

Standard sudoku rules applies. Fill the grid with numbers from 1 to 9 so each digit occurs exactly once in every row, column and 3x3 box.

Digit in the circle is the sum of the digits on the arrow. Digits on the thermometer increase from the bulb.

When the tip of the arrow and the bulb overlap, they merge into a straight line that looks like normal thermo without bulb or arrow body without end. In other words, thermo bulb and arrow end merge inside one cell.

This is actually an interesting puzzle. It shows why i did not continue this road of merging rules. On paper, thermos and arrows can be fit together. But in practice, i need to set a normal arrow and thermo to make it work. The problem is, with line based rules, exclude between line and palindrome isk which doesn’t matter, all rules works well when the line is long. Stacking two of them together means double the length of comfort. The grid is just not big enough for extra long line.

To conclude, this type of rules ain’t for me. It cause me too much trouble. It has way too much connection with normal rules than i like. And i can’t set normal variant simply because i can’t find anything undiscovered. I think this is before i notice outside clues can all be turned into inside clues. Overlapping lines, i guess, may never reach the satisfaction of opposite outside clues.

Solution code: Row 5 and column 5(18 digits)

I finally managed to finish this one thanks for your help! An interesting idea that delivers for a very interesting solve path as well (especially that lovely opening), but definitely a 4/5 diff at least for me.
Certain points were quite a hit-or-miss for me, but I guess they didn't really click well with my intuitions :[

bigger: yeah, i totally get it. but here's an interesting question, what will make this variant (thermo after arrow) solve smooth. or the better question, what is the average length of line that is most suitable for this variant.

I'm trying this puzzle at the moment and I must say that, what an amazing idea for the opening and then the flow after that! I'm so intrigued to get to the end of this :)

Edit: Actually, I spoke way too soon... While the opening was very fascinating to me, I quickly ran into a halt in the later solve. I'm not even sure if there's a proper logical path for that besides 'mindless' one-by-one eliminations :|

bigger:there's a reason why it's a three star. in early days, i did not put a lot control in solution path, which means, the stucking point sometimes will get very narrow. do you want me to give you a hint?
