Fog of Chaos

(Published on 26. February 2023, 18:09 by lepton)

Rules

Fog of War: The grid is covered with fog. There's one initial light source that illuminates the darkness. Place correct digits to get more light.

Chaos Construction: Every row, column and region contains digits 1-9. Regions are to be determined by the solver, and must be a set of nine orthogonally connected cells.

Region Sum Lines: Digits along a blue line sum to the same value in each region it passes through. Different lines may have different sums. Each line visits at least two regions.

X on Region Borders: Digits separated by X sum to 10 and belong to different regions. Not all X are given.

So, 7 hours on the timer - who know how much of that I was actually paying attention for and over multiple days.

2 errors - one was a bad deduction I failed to consider all options - my bad completely. 1 was a silly error.

I got at least 1 third in before I made a single mistake or got properly stuck which is why I kept at it. also with FOW I know I have everything I'm meant to have and I'm not trying to work something out that already has an error in it as the fog keeps clearing when I do get something.

it is a great puzzle but probably a bit above my normal level. What kept me at it was that I got through the start no issue and I was home sick from work with nothing to do.

break-in was quite tough, with the rest of the puzzle after that only moderately difficult—and highly enjoyable! thank you.

Extremely hard. Extremely fun, though!

Are regions like snakes or could have branches?

--------------

Regions are not snakes, they can be any shape, include branches or 2x2 block.

Very cool sudoku, apparently the only FoW/CC in the portal, so props to you for creating it, the clues blend nicely.

Unlike some others, I enjoyed the fog in this puzzle very much.

Amazing puzzle. It seems like there are two camps emerging regarding fog of war. I thought the use of the fog in this puzzle was excellent, with the visible cells sometimes drawing you away from where you should be looking.

Combining one of the easiest rulesets (fog) with one of the hardest rulesets (Chaos construction) results in one of the best puzzles I have ever done.

Very nice! Thank you for setting. I liked the combo of fog of war and chaos construction.

Loved it. Combination chaos construction and fog of war? Two great flavors that taste great together.

Absolutely fantastic! One of the first puzzles I've done with this "fog" feature, it really brings a whole new dynamic! Amazing setting :)

Very nice puzzle, thanks! (I solved it when it was posted on the CTC discord)

I echo DiMono's thoughts; I think a version where the fog is lifted would be good. (And a good title might be "Regional Chaos", which I think is not the title of any other puzzle in LMD.)

For anyone wondering why the puzzle briefly had a low difficulty rating, that was me, I gave it 3/5. My opinion would change pretty dramatically without fog, but with fog there is never anything extra to look at.

I'm not sure the Fog Of War is beneficial to this puzzle. It probably would have been better as a normal Chaos Construction puzzle.

Oh...it shouldn't have such a low rating...

If it weren't for the fog, it would probably be a really good puzzle.

As I said, the *fog of war* can sometimes be very good at guiding the path of problem solving. But more often, they will cover some key clues, making the difficulty of solving the problem inflated.

One of the few 4 star puzzles that I was able to solve.
Difficult deductions, but no guessing needed.
Loved it all the way!!
