Bushido (Star Battle Japanese Sums Fillomino)

(Published on 6. December 2022, 09:00 by Agent)

My first attempt at an object placement type of puzzle. The combination of rules seemed natural after seeing Jesper's Japanese Sums Fillomino, and au voleur's Star Battle Fillomino. I hope you will enjoy!

Rules

  • Standard Fillomino rules apply. Divide the grid into regions and enter into each cell the size of its region. No two regions of the same size may share an edge.
  • Shade exactly 2 cells in each row, each column and each region. Shaded cells cannot touch, not even diagonally.
  • Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of numbers in each contiguous sequence of unshaded cells in that row or column, in the correct order. For a given row or column, either all clues or no clues are provided.
  • A "." stands for any digit from 0 to 9, but a number may not begin with a 0. A "?" represents a sequence of unshaded cells whose sum is unknown.

Example Puzzle (5x5, 1 star)

Main Puzzle: Bushido (10x10)

Solution code: Row 4 (from left to right) then row 8 (from left to right)

You just know it's a good puzzle when it is so tightly woven that it makes you think repeatedly you've broken it and you did not. Awesome puzzle and solving path. Enjoyed it a lot. Thanks :)

Another incredibly clever puzzle with seemingly few clues expertly disposed. More than once I thought I'd broken it as I tiptoed along its narrow path but somehow I never fell over. Even though I handicapped myself at the start by completely forgetting the region rule. Thanks Agent.

I struggled immensely with this puzzle for pretty much all of 2023 and it was worth every minute :)

Such a fun puzzle! It was very surprising seeing how powerful such a small set of clues ended up being.

-- Thanks RJBlarmo! Indeed this combination of constraints is very strong :)

Very nice! The limited number of clues made it quite approachable.

-- Thanks Mark Sweep! Seems a bit paradoxical haha but I see what you mean :)

Das Beispiel ist aber nicht eindeutig lösbar!? Oder übersehe ich etwas?

--

Bingo. Genau die Regel habe ich übersehen. Danke! :-)

Awesome puzzle with a really beautiful and spectacular finish! Quite challenging for me, I would say low end 5 stars, with the mid-solve feeling the most difficult.
