Yin-Yang Compass Fillomino

(Published on 13. October 2022, 14:59 by MagnusJosefsson)

Rules

Standard Fillomino and Yin-Yang rules apply. Each Fillomino region must be either entirely shaded or entirely unshaded.

Additionally, compass rules apply: If there is an arrow in a cell, the digit in that cell equals the total number of cells belonging to the region the arrow comes from that are in the direction of the arrow. Not all arrows are given.

The given digit is shaded.

Standard Fillomino rules:
  • Divide the grid into regions and enter into each cell the size of its region.
  • No two regions of the same size may share an edge.

Yin-Yang rules: Shade some cells in the grid so that:
  • All shaded cells are orthogonally connected.
  • All unshaded cells are orthogonally connected.
  • No 2x2 area is entirely shaded or entirely unshaded.

I was craving another Compass Fillomino after finishing your series last weekend, so I was excited to find you had one more. The inclusion of Yin-Yang shading really changed up the logic. I found this just as challenging as the large ring. Very rewarding solve, I enjoyed it immensely.

The feeling of "this must be broken" only to magically find a logical way out is a thrilling feeling. This puzzle was great

Thanks a lot harrison! I love it when my puzzles can provide that sort of experience. /Magnus

Very nice minimalistic puzzle, the addition of Yin Yang works wonderfully. I found it comparatively a lot easier than #3 and #5.

Looking forward for more Compass Fillominos in the future!
----

Thanks Agent! Though I'm not surprised that this one was relatively easy for you since it involves Yin-Yang. :) /Magnus

A masterpiece !
How it worked with so few clues really demonstrates the power of Yin Yang (and the brightness of the setter of course !)

I confused myself at the beginning with the coloring of yin yang which introduced a difference in the method of solving compared to the way I color fillomino usually, so I had to be really careful because it made me do some wrong deductions at certain points.

I really loved how some little fillominos affected the whole solve later on.

Thanks a lot ! I wonder what will be your next idea for a compass fillomino hybrid...

Thanks a lot for your wonderful comments, I'm really glad you enjoyed the puzzle! /Magnus

This is the first compass puzzle I've solved, so it was very hard for me haha. But it was fun, very nice construction, well done!

Thank you the_cogito! That is quite impressive, no wonder it felt hard :). /Magnus

Such an extraordinary puzzle. You've made Compass Fillomino one of my favourite rulesets because you execute them so well. I think solving the others in the series are pretty necessary for this one.

Thanks for yet another brilliant puzzle! :)

----
Thanks a lot ONeill! Yeah, trying this without previous compass Fillomino experience would likely be pretty tough :). /Magnus

I find these puzzles totally captivating, probably because I spend most of the solve thinking I'm about to break it, only for all the pieces to come together in such a beautiful way. Adored the rules combo on this and the interplay between them. Very glad to see the series continuing! Thank you Magnus :)

----
Thank you polar! I liked this combination a lot too :). /Magnus

My goodness, what a mindbender! Fabulously intricate and very rewarding to solve. Great construction, Magnus, thank you! :)

PS: Using two grids side-by-side - one for yin-yang shading and the other for fillomino numbers and colouring - was helpful to me.

----
Thank you Vebby! Interesting about the two grid approach. Personally, I favour avoiding colors and instead marking unfinished region using lines when a fillomino puzzle requires shading. /Magnus

This puzzle is the continuation of my Compass Fillomino series but also adds the twist of integrating Yin-Yang logic. I think this combination turned out really well and hope that you will enjoy it as well.

Difficulty-wise this puzzle is a little hard to rate. I think for someone experienced in both Compass Fillomino and Yin-Yang it is solidly four stars, but for anyone missing significant experience in either of those it is likely to feel more like five stars.

Good luck and enjoy the puzzle!
