Sudoku Variants Series (385) - Consecutive Sums Sudoku

(Published on 21. September 2022, 02:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Consecutive Sums Sudoku
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of all digits that have at least one consecutive digit as neighbour in the corresponding row or column.

This puzzle can be solved in a complete logical way, but contains a few tricky steps at the start. I have written those steps as a hidden comment, for learning purposes.

Inspiration for this type comes from SudokuExplorer.

Solve online in F-Puzzles or CtC-app (thx Nick Smirnov!)

Solution code: Row 1, followed by column 6.

Amazing logic here! Thank you Richard!

Ein Glanzstück dieser Serie!

A fun puzzle. I got started quickly, but I had to start over several times. Funnily enough, just like PrimeWeasel, I had problems with the 40th level. One so easily overlooks some of the possibilities. :)

Nice to see this appear on the SVS! Lovely implementation with lots of clever interactions, thanks Richard!

I know Richard for a very long time... thought I knew him and his tricks very well...

But I really don't have any clue here :-)))

Haha, glad I can still surprise you!
Normally I would say that this is a good case to discuss at our next Stammtisch. ;-)

Really great! And absolutely logical solvable.

on 24. September 2022, 14:56 by PrimeWeasel
I found it to be a 3 star until row 7 tripped me up twice, and therefore rated it 4. Very Nice nonetheless!

Very nice, but it is 5 stars for me, as is the one from sudokuexplorer!

Reply: Thanks for the solve!
I am absolutely fine with five stars. :-)
When I solved it again to write the walkthrough, I found it harder than I had in mind. I hope you found the logic that brought you to the end. :-)

I think I did do it logically, i don't remember using any ridiculously long chains or t&e

Thanks for all the nice comments!
Based on different kinds of feedback, I have the feeling the puzzle is not so approachable for some of you, so I have written the full walkthrough through the puzzle in a hidden comment now. I must admit it wasn't easy to solve it again; I created it a while ago and went on holiday inbetween. :-)
I am curious if there are other paths as well. And for those who needed trial and error: I hope you learn something from the walkthrough.
---
Edit: my apologies for typo's in the walkthrough; let me know if there are and I will fix them. :-)

Very nice puzzle, Richard! I'm very surprised it's 5 stars difficulty. 3 stars for me as well. I guess I was lucky to keep seeing the logic path. Challenging till the end, but never got stuck.

It's incredible how you managed to make an even cooler puzzle with this variant and also triggered my memories when solving the previous one from SE ;)
I did find this one quite hard and tricky as well (mainly the mid solve and near the end, hence my 4/5 diff), but it was extremely enjoyable with lots of elegant deductions!

Richard - great puzzle!

on 21. September 2022, 23:16 by Piatato
Very nice! It’s definitely easy to overlook some options or not realize some deductions throughout the solve, I think that explains the percieved difficulty.

Brilliant puzzle! Thanks.

Excellent!

Added some encouraging lines.

If you look at the correct place(s), this puzzle isn't that hard. There is some unusual logic hidden at that place(s). Once discovered, it solves without much trouble... In case you struggled through the puzzle with T&E, I have written the logic in a hidden comment.

Oh my. Richard thinks this is 3 difficulty, I found it to be 3¾ and rated 4, but the crowd says 5!

Reply: I am very much surprised too. I am convinced that my puzzle is easier than the one from SudokuExplorer, and that one has four stars. Must be the difference in groups of solvers...

Excellent puzzle! Very nice logic, thank you
