Sudoku Variants Series (380) - Virtual killer cages

(Published on 17. August 2022, 02:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Virtual killer cages
Apply classic sudoku rules.
A digit in a grey cell gives the sum of a virtual killer cage of two or three cells of which at least one cell is horizontally or vertically adjacent to the grey cell. All digits in a virtual cage must be different, but cages may overlap each other. All possible grey cells are given and grey cells can also be part of another killer cage.

Inspiration for this type comes from Steve360.

This puzzle can be solved by logic alone, but beware: it is very error sensitive, so be very cautious before writing digits in the grid!

Solve online in F-Puzzles or CtC-app (thx Nick Smirnov!)

Solution code: Row 1, followed by row 9.

8=2 (unter der 8) + 6 (rechts neben der 8)
---
Reply: the 6 and the 2 cannot be in the same killer cage, since they are not connected horizontally or vertically.

Added links and tag for online solving. Another huge thanks to Nick!
One day I'll learn how to do it myself. Promised! :-)

Once again, the negative constraint is much more powerful (and useful) than the positive ones.
---
Haha, you are right!
That is exactly why I am so fond of negative constraints! ;-)
Thanks for your ongoing interest in solving SVS-puzzles!

I assume a virtual killer cage must consist of orthogonally connected cells just like a regular killer cage - but the rules doesn't actually specify that.
---
@Henry: Yes, only orthogonal. In the example the 7 in the top row would have been shaded otherwise (7 = 5 + 1 + 1).

Very nice puzzle, thanks

BTW you've made the solution code visible :)

Oops! That was to compare yours with mine to see if/where the typo was. Thanks for notifying! :-)
