Wichtel 2021 (7): In der Weihnachtsbäckerei

(Published on 4. October 2022, 21:02 by wichtel)

To Christmas 2021 some eager puzzlefriends have again arranged a group in which everybody had to make anonymously a puzzle for someone else. These puzzles are now presented one after the other here in the portal.

„Bah, what a cock-up“, Gordon cursed, as he gathered up the fallen Christmas cookies. „Oh, I am sure they could still be eaten," replied Alfons. „The floor is clean, after all.“ The two elves1 had, as a surprise for Klaus2 invented a new slitherlink-almond cookie variety: only when the sugar-frosted digits were arranged just so could they be solved as a traditional slitherlink puzzle. The seven cookies had been decorated, in the traditional manner of a hessian Bethmännchen cookie, with diagonally positioned almond halves. „You're right, but now the cookies are a complete jumble,“ Gordon continued to whine. But Alfons reminded him that they had fortunately preserved the original bake-and-solve-sketch (see the upper diagram3) for just such an occurrence. He briefly rummaged in a drawer, and was soon holding the sketch in his hands: „Behold! We can use this to get the cookies back in their correct order.“

But when they had turned back to their baked goods, there were no longer seven cookies lying there: instead, they caught Jamie, red-handed, in the act of swallowing the very last bite of one section of the slitherlink bake. „Jamie, that is completely unacceptable!“ Gordon was practically shouting, and Alfons too was visibly enraged: „How can we be expected to construct a loop out of this when a piece of it is missing!“ The hubbub now attracted Kevin as well, who suddenly was standing in the doorway. Just as Jamie was the inveterate snacker of the group, so was Kevin known as the monstrously clever one. He immediately identified the problem (Jamie was, after all, still in the room), took a glance at the sketch and the remaining cookies, and thought for a moment. Then he remarked. „How would you feel about making your creation a bit more chocolatey? You see, if you first label each almond with the digit that would normally fit there to create a valid puzzle, and then rearranged the six leftover cookies as follows, and put them into a triangular shape“ — now he was positioning the cookies as in the lower diagram — „then you could position a couple of nonadjacent chocolate drops, in such a way that the almond digits indicate the number of chocolate drops located in the direction pointed by the almond, and so that a loop could be drawn through all the empty cells, i.e., those that are neither occupied by almond nor chocolate, with only obtuse angles. In this way, all the sugar-frosted digits are still correctly oriented!“ As usual, Alfons and Gordon were flabbergasted by Kevin's inspiration. Meanwhile, Jamie was just glad to have the focus turned away from him, and used the opportunity to make himself scarce.

1 Yes, even elves nowadays bear modern names.
2 This is an affectionate name for Santa, for those who know him well...
3 The grey cells in the sketch represent the almonds, which are oriented in the direction of the arrow.

Solution code: For each row the number of chocolate drops.
