Dotted Eighth Note

(Published on 8. August 2022, 17:05 by haligonian)

Normal sudoku rules apply.

This musical puzzle is delivered in common (4/4) time.

Digits in cells separated by a white dot must be consecutive. **Note that a negative constraint applies**: once this given pair is found, those two digits cannot be orthogonally adjacent anywhere else. The title of the puzzle contains an important musical clue as to the [beat] value of this pair.

Adjacent digits on a green line must have a difference of at least 5.

Digits on a grey palindrome line must read the same forwards and backwards.

Digits in a cell with a grey circle must be odd.

Adjacent cells marked with an X or V must contain digits summing to 10 or 5, respectively. Not all X's or V's are given.

SPOILER ALERT: Only read this next part if you do not know how to resolve the musical clue or don't want to look it up...

In 4/4 time, an eighth note has a value of a 1/2 a beat. Adding a dot to any note adds an additional 1/2 of that note's value. For example, a half note is worth 2 beats. Adding a dot is equivalent to adding 1 (being half of 2) to that half note's value.

I think this puzzle is 1/5 for most, but anyone unfamiliar with German Whispers rules may find it more of a 1.5 or 2 star difficulty.

Solution code: Row 1, then column 4

Didnt need the music clue and the negative consecutive constraint just for one cell. Was pretty fun tho.

I'm also not sure about the music clue and didn't need it to solve. Either way it was a nice puzzle, thanks for setting!

Thank you! I think next time I will up the difficulty and allow the theme to be more important to the solve. Still getting experience setting puzzles :) I appreciate your feedback! --haligonian

I don't understand the music puzzle, I studied music, not at the school, but I don't see where the puzzle is. And you can resolve the puzzle without knowing music. That's what I think, if you can explain I'll be pleased

@Guillem98 I'll add a hidden comment with the explanation. After creating it, I realized it may be too alienating to *need* the musical clue, now it just allows some to get digits in the grid faster. --haligonian
