Aquatic Construction (7x7)

(Published on 19. June 2022, 17:24 by KNT)

This puzzle is a teaser for a relatively large project I have been working on. I started this as an example puzzle, but I realized I liked the initial logic so much that I decided to polish it up and post it individually. After all, I barely have posted any accessible puzzles, so I hope this one can be solved by more of you. This should be between 3 and 4 stars difficulty.

Rules:

  • Normal chaos construction rules apply.
  • The final irregular grid will satisfy standard aquarium rules with respect to the outside clues.
  • If a clued cell is air, then the digit in the cell indicates the number of water cells seen in the directions of the arrows combined. Likewise, if a clued cell is water, then the digit in the cell indicates the number of air cells seen in the directions of the arrows combined.
Clarifications and Definitions:

  • A Chaos Construction is an irregular sudoku in which the regions are to be determined by the solver. All regions are orthogonally connected.
  • Aquarium is a pencil puzzle type in which a grid is entirely tessellated into polyominoes. Every cell in the grid is either air or water.
  • In an aquarium, if a cell in any polyomino is water, then every cell in the same and lower rows of the polyomino must also be water. Outside clues indicate the total number of water cells in the respective row or column of the grid.
Below is a very simple 5x5 example grid to demonstrate the ruleset. In this example, a blue cell represents water and a yellow cell represents air.

And now here is the main puzzle, which can be solved on Penpa+ here. Happy solving! If you feel stuck or need any further clarifications, please leave a hidden comment and I will respond to you as soon as I can. Answer check is enabled with green edges and blue digits.

Solution code: Enter the water cells in Row 2 followed by the water cells in Column 7. No spaces or special characters.

@Steven R, @MagnusJosefsson I'm glad you both enjoyed it and I hope you attempt the full version once it is complete! It's definitely going to be a very tricky puzzle, but the way it is currently shaping up, I am quite proud of it.

@marcmees Yes, I imagine this ruleset can feel alien. I experienced it firsthand when setting. I hope the follow up can live up to your expectations.

@DiMono I'm glad you remembered that rule and I'm glad you enjoyed the solve!

@Phistomefel And thank you for solving it!

@Jesper Thank you for your consistent kind feedback on my puzzles! I'm happy you enjoyed this, even if it is quite simple.

@Niverio Watching you solve this live was very fun for me :)

@Wonderment I tried to make a CC with rules that felt both very intuitive for CC, yet also very new. I'm glad this hit the mark for you!

Had to learn a lot from mistakes, maybe normal with a new conceptual combi in chaos. A puzzle that creates expectations. Thanks.

Nice one! Thank you for setting this beauty, KNT! :)

It took me way too long to remember that Chaos Construction requires all regions to be the same size as the width of the grid. After that, it was smooth sailing :D

Great teaser! Fun and approachable, while facilitating some useful insights into this ruleset.

Note to self: Don't find yourself locked in an aquarium, I sucked at this logic.

Approachable with lovely logic all the way through, I’ll be on the lookout for the larger project :) Thanks KNT!
