Full Rank Sandwich

(Published on 5. June 2022, 03:22 by RockyRoer)

This is the latest in my "Sandwiches Without Givens" series. Other puzzles in the series are:

The Rules:

  1. Normal sudoku rules apply.
  2. Clues on the outside of the grid (some of which must be deduced) are simultaneously sandwich clues and full rank clues:
    • [Sandwich] The sum of the digits between the 1 and the 9 in that row or column
    • [Full Rank] Considering all rows and columns as 9-digit numbers read from the direction of the clue and ranked from lowest (1) to highest (36), a clue represents where in the ranking that row/column lies.

The Puzzle:

Great puzzle! Very hard, you should definitely make some notes of the possible combinations or else you could get lost.

Rule set seems impossible yet a true masterpiece.

Wonderful puzzle! Very nice interactions between the two constraints leading to very original logic.

Reply: Thanks! Not quite all question marks like your recent puzzles... but pretty close :-)

Reply: I cannot think of a simple break-in for this rule set without that 28 clue. It works very nicely with just one given clue.

Beautiful puzzle! The two constraints seem to be meant for each other. I think this rule set has big potential and I would love to see more of this. Take a bow and thanks:)

Reply: I agree! I was so shocked at how well they interacted and that giving just one was enough to set an entire puzzle! Thanks for solving it!
