Taijitu (ft. KNT)

(Published on 26. May 2022, 18:00 by TotallyNormalCat)

This puzzle is a collab between me and KNT. Enjoy :)

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Normal Yin Yang rules apply. That is, shade some cells in the grid such that all shaded cells are connected and all unshaded cells are connected. No 2x2 box may be fully shaded or fully unshaded.
  • Numbered rooms: clues outside the grid indicate the digit which has to be placed in the Nth cell in the corresponding direction, where N is the digit placed in the first cell in that direction.
  • Skyscrapers: clues outside the grid indicate how many numbers can be "seen" when looking into the grid along the row or column. A number is visible only when it is larger than all numbers that appear before it along the line of sight.
  • If the first cell seen in the direction of an outside clue is unshaded, then the outside clue is a numbered rooms clue, and the indexed digit is shaded.
  • If the first cell seen in the direction of a clue is shaded, then the outside clue is a skyscraper clue, and seen skyscrapers alternate between shaded and unshaded.

If I was ever asked "what would be the craziest and most alien thing that you'd ever see?", this puzzle would definitely lie in top 2 answers of that question.
My goodness, every deduction felt so fruitful and surreal despite progression went so slowly, but I never stopped being amazed at how everything worked together like this from the start to the very end.
I'm crying because I'm so proud that I chose this puzzle to live solve as the 1000th solve on this site, and what a banger this is! ;O

I knew this had to be that good !! I had spotted this puzzle a few days ago and I have waited for a quiet moment to solve it because I knew this would be tricky for me and source of many possible mistakes along the way. Well... mistakes were made indeed, but it made me appreciate even more how subtle the contruction is. Very well done to 2 of my favorite setters, and looking forward to your next collaboration !!

My initial reaction reading the rules was "This is outrageous!", then I was proven wrong - NOT! It is in fact an outrageous puzzle, I'm happy to have solved it as smoothly as I did.

BTW, Taijitu is a curious title for a yin-yang puzzle, because a crucial element of the modern taijitu is the eyes of the yin-yang fishes, which are isolated, in obvious violation of YY rules. Or you can choose to refer to the original taijitu which is just a plain circle - symbolizing the pre-creation chaos in which yin and yang had yet to emerge - but that would make even less sense for a YY puzzle.

Very nice puzzle and impressive construction, the alternating skyscraper shading leads to some great logic.

What a brutal journey through my own hubris and stupidity. A truely wonderful puzzle.

Spent over 10 hours using the wrong rules, twice. Took a break to encourage my brain hamsters and glad to have got back on it. Was nervous to the last digit.

Top class puzzle from two of the best setters, thank-you both very much <3

That was really hard, it took me 2 hours with help from both constructors. But what a spectacular puzzle!

When I first looked at the grid my first thought was: how can this have less clues than most normal numbered rooms or skyscraper sudokus??? It is a miracle that it solves and so beautifully at that.
