Sudoku Variants Series (367) - Broken X-Sums Sudoku

(Published on 20. April 2022, 00:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Broken X-Sums Sudoku
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of the first digits from that side. The number of digits to count is (X-1) or (X+1) where X is digit in the first cell from that side.

Inspiration for this type comes from Joseph nehme.

Loved this puzzle! Everything gelled together really well and there were some fun bits of deduction while not being overly complicated. Thanks! Really enjoyed it.

I can't believe what passes for 2 stars difficulty in your book nowadays, Richard! :D Perhaps the fact that almost all your recent SVS have been voted up from 2 to 3 stars by the solvers should give you some reason to adjust?

BTW, I think this one is very suitable for CtC.
---
Most of the recent SVS-puzzles are just in the easier half of all 3-star SVS-puzzles. But maybe I am a bit optimistic about the difficulty rating. Mostly I look how clean my own test version looks after testing and if there are nasty tricks necessary. For this one, I thought that wasn't the case, so put it on two stars.
It is also possible that having a decent two star SVS again is high on my wish list and all my efforts to make one fail...
Anyway, the solvers again made this a 3-star puzzle, so you are right. I should learn from these experiences. ;-)

<<<
I think you underestimate the fact that most solvers are new to the ruleset of any given SVS puzzle, which is always changing (that of course is the charm of the series and why we do them dutifully). In my own experience, the subjective difficulty differential between a puzzle of unknown ruleset and the same puzzle after having solved another one with the same ruleset is about one star on average.
