Sudoku Variants Series (365) - Skyscrapers after 1 Sudoku

(Published on 6. April 2022, 00:01 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Skyscrapers after 1
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Each digit represents a skyscraper of the corresponding height. Clues outside the grid indicate how many buildings can be seen from the cell with digit 1 from that direction, where higher buildings block the visibility of lower buildings.

Inspiration for this type comes from borescoper.

I really liked this variant.
Very familiar with skyscrapers, this ruleset asks for thinking it in a different way.

None of my testers had problems with the instructions, but I hope I have improved them now in such a way that they are understandable.

Changed the wording of the instructions in English only. I hope it makes sense.

@Richard: Thx for the clarification, but "The rules don't say anything about the buildings before the 1" is not true: It says "Each digit represents a skyscraper of the corresponding height", and that means digits before the 1 represent buildings as well.

@Henry: you are right. My answer was not complete. It is now. Sorry for my too quick and incomplete response.

The viewer is in the cell with the 1.
The rules don't say anything about the buildings before the 1, so they can be ignored while determining the visible buildings AFTER the 1.

The rules need some clarification, as "seen after the digit 1” can mean two different things:
A. Standing behind the digit 1 and looking - digits before the 1 are all unseen;
B. Standing at the clue and looking - digits before the 1 are potentially seen but never counted.

In interpretation A, 456123789 would have a count of 5 (23789); in B, it would be 3 (789 only, as 23 are blocked by the 6, while 456 are also seen but seen *before* the 1).

Are the scyscrapers after 1 or is the viewer after 1?
Would the left clue for 912345678 be 0 or 7?
