Killer Shikoku

(Published on 9. March 2022, 00:16 by the_cogito)

This puzzle was set as part of an open challenge by zetamath to set a sudoku with no 5s, and was subsequently livestreamed by zetamath. I hope you enjoy solving as much I enjoyed setting.
Rules:

- Normal sudoku rules mostly apply; however, all 5s have been replaced by some other digit, and so there will be exactly one repeated digit in each row, column, and box. (A digit may be repeated in one house and not repeated in another -- e.g., the digit that repeats in box 1 need not be the same as the digits that repeat in rows 1, 2, or 3.)

Additionally:
- Divide the grid into rectangular regions of orthogonally connected cells. Each rectangle contains exactly one circle. A single cell with a circle counts as a 1x1 rectangle.
- A number in a circle represents how many cells are in the rectangle the circle belongs to.
- Rectangles cannot overlap.
- Every cell in the grid is part of a rectangle.
- Digits may NOT repeat in a rectangle.

I saw this puzzle on YouTube but paused before watching.
First solved it then watched it and found the same solution but not in the same sequence. So there are a few ways to finish this. It is very doable.I like the repeat digits. This gives it an extra demention.

Thanx

A stellar execution on a simple idea that may drive you a bit mad as you solve it.

I highly recommend this, and I will say that this is a lot less weird than something like sudon'tku. Your sudoku knowledge still very much applies, it's just been twisted a bit. Roughly in the same weirdness category as s-cells.
