Sudoku Variants Series (351) - Double Trouble Killer Sudoku

(Published on 15. December 2021, 00:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Double Trouble Killer Sudoku
Apply classic sudoku rules.
The small numbers in the upper left corner of each cage (dotted outlined region) indicate the sum of the digits in that cage. Digits in cells with a diamond have to be counted double. Within each cage all digits must be different.

Inspiration for this type comes from Mad-Tyas: Easy, Medium, Hard.

Solve online in F-Puzzles (thanks Mad-Tyas!) or in Penpa+ (thanks henrypijames!)

Solution code: Row 1, folowed by column 8.

The number 74 is wrong - correct is the number 78
---
Reply: having a sum of 33 higher than the maximum of 45 isn't possible with only four diamonds. So 74 is the correct sum. :-)

Nice concept, the break in was very elegant and the rest of the solve flowed very naturally from that. Managed to solve it in under 25 minutes, which is a personal best I think for a 3-star puzzle :-)

tough entry, but smooth solving after that. thanks for an other great puzzle, Richard.
Great lay out of the diamonds, perfect copycat of the original M-T puzzle style.
---
Reply: My idea for the lay-out of the diamonds was in fact inspired by SVS #344 Lockout Lines; at first I wasn't aware that there were three DTK's (someone recommended the type to me with a link to only the easy DTK). Only after creating my own DTK, I found out there were two more, with one having also the diamond-theme in the placed diamonds.
But I decided not to adjust my puzzle, since it has a totally different solve. And that's what counts! :-)

@Richard. I agree with that bottom line and hope you know I did not mention that as a critic ... on the contrary, I think it is a nice tribute to an other author.

To be honest; I had at least my doubts interpreting your words. Even looked up 'copycat' in the dictionary. The tone of voice of that word seemed negative to me. But if it's meant otherway: thanks!

Penpa+: https://git.io/JDuEX

Couldn't find an elegant path through mid-game, 4 stars difficulty for me (and another reinforcement for my strong dislike of killer sudokus).

I feel honored that my Double Trouble idea has made it to this incredible list of variants. I have to say that the idea of double counted digits existed before I started my series, but without my knowledge.

Thank you very much for setting this puzzle, Richard! It's beautifully designed and was a great pleasure to solve.
