Pentominoes Intersection

(Published on 13. September 2021, 00:54 by RockyRoer)

This puzzle is the final puzzle in my Intersections Series -- a handful of puzzles using a new ruleset where the clues give the total of the cells that two cages have in common. You might like to start with one of those two puzzles: This puzzle adds a construction element as you must draw in the cages. Good luck!

The Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku Rules Apply: Fill every row, column and 3x3 box with the digits 1 to 9 with no repeats.
  • [Pentominoes]Place pentominoes using every cell except the given digit 9, such that no pentominoes of the same shape (even after rotations and reflections) are touching. The digits may not repeat within a pentomino, just like killer cages.
  • [Intersections]The clues in the boxes must separate two different pentominoes, and provide the sum of the cells the cages have in common.
    • Ex: If a 12489 pentomino is separated with another by a rectangle containing a 7, then the other pentomino must contain a 1, 2, 4 and cannot contain an 8 or 9.

Wow, what an incredible puzzle. The way the intersection clues interacted with the pentomino forming logic was just beautiful. Thank you for setting such a gem :)

Very nice puzzle! Took me a long time to find the break in, then it goes pretty smoothly. Thank you!

Very hard and very rewarding. The ruleset produces multiple kinds of insight and constraint along the way. Bravo!

This is such a lovely puzzle! It felt like a very linear and substantial solution path with a great variety of logic. Two hours well spent! :)

4½ stars difficulty for me. Took much longer to find the break-in than I should have.

Great puzzle! The concept worked really well and it was a lot of fun constructing the pentominoes.

In the rules on f-puzzles it says "the given 6" rather than 9.
