Sudoku Variants Series (326) - Odd-Even Sandwich Sudoku

(Published on 23. June 2021, 00:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Odd-Even Sandwich Sudoku
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Clues on top and left of the grid indicate the sum of the odd digits that are placed between the digits 2 and 8 in the respective row or column. Clues below and on the right of the grid indicate the sum of the even digits that are placed between the digits 1 and 9 in the respective row or column.

Inspiration for this type comes from stephane.bura.

Very nice! I like this variant. Both this puzzle and the one by stephane.bura are great.

Oh I did solve this puzzle logically (all the failed attempts and the finally successful one) - and I basically followed the path you've laid out. In fact, I believe this puzzle to be fairly bifurcation-proof.

But since I always tend to approach things systematically, I first wrote out the possible breakdowns of each clue. That made things much more clearly during this he solve - except when I committed this oversight in the initial clues breakdown, it obviously plagued me throughout the solve. And that wasn't the only mistake I made either.

Of course this puzzle can be solved without T&E! I have written a hidden comment with the first logical steps in the solve. For those of you who didn't find it, this might bring some enlightening afterwards. :-)
