Pipemare: Onboarding

Play on Penpa

Welcome to The Pipe Factory! We are so very excited to have you join us as we fabricate the finest pipes for the most demanding of clients. Our pipes are like no other because we shape them like numbers. Why, you ask? Why not!

To help you get comfortable with the process of laying out and affixing pipes, please complete this onboarding course. To complete it, you will need to form a single pipe that travels from the arrows pointing into the grid to the arrows pointing out of the grid. Please ensure your pipe is to-code, meaning it may not touch itself at any point on its path, even at a corner.

Digits along the pipe must be of the correct shape to allow liquid to flow. Liquid can flow through a digit in either direction as follows:

1: Top to Bottom

2: Left to Right

3: Top to Left

4: Right to Bottom

5: Left to Right

6: Top to Right

7: Left to Bottom

8: Top to Bottom OR Left to Right (but not both simultaneously; may vary between 8's)

9: Liquid cannot flow through the 9

But completing the pipe is not enough. You will also need to fill every row, column, and 3x3 box with the numbers 1-9. We know you can handle this because your resume mentions Cracking The Cryptic as a reference. Please, send Mark and Simon our regards.

Solution code: The numbers that make up the pipe, from arrow pointing into the grid to arrow pointing out

I'm pretty new to variants and had never seen something like this before, had the puzzle on my bookmarks for a few months thinking "I'll get to that, but even with all those numbers it seems super complicated"... 13 minute solve, very enjoyable 1* puzzle!

I can not say enough about this puzzle. Love all those fun bridge and pipe game apps. Love sudoku. And putting them together, just WOW!!! Perfect balance of ease with making you think. A great narrative and story telling puzzle. Just brilliant. If you haven't already submitted to CTC do so immediately.

I'm very new at Sudoku and this is one that I really enjoyed. I prefer easier puzzles so far, but especially ones that have some special twist to them. Well twisty pipe did the trick. Very enjoyable.

Thank you for the feedback CJK! Apologies for neglecting the Sudoku tag. I am adding to this and the other Pipemare puzzles.

I'm not super familiar with Penpa but I created a version in it and added the link to the puzzle page. I hope I constructed it correctly. I just use highlighting to draw the pipe in f-puzzles.

Added a Penpa link and the Sudoku label

I quite liked this idea! But even if it is an interesting variant, it should still fall in the sudoku category, so could you please add the sudoku tag? :)
Also, as a suggestion: Wouldn't it be better to use penpa-edit in this case instead of f-puzzles, so one can also draw the pipe into the grid?

PS: I can't remember to mention Cracking The Cryptic in my resume ;)
