Wichtel 2020 (8): Das exotische Spätabendland

(Published on 23. September 2021, 22:00 by wichtel)

To Christmas 2020 some eager puzzlefriends have again arranged a group in which everybody had to make anonymously a puzzle for someone else. These puzzles are now presented one after the other here in the portal.

The globalization juggernaut has even reached into our little gnome workshop. Nowadays, gnome commissions are fluttering in from every corner of the world, even from the Far Occident. This morning finds the head gnome once again lecturing about the new challenges, while the gnome apprentices listen more or less inattentively: "When we're tinkering with our puzzles, it is extremely important to be cognizant of regional customs. That is to say, your assignment is to combine solid domestic gnome craft with more exotic elements. I've brought you an example that was recently created for one of these new Far Occident clients.

We're dealing with a perfectly normal cryptified Japanese Sums puzzle with the digits 1 to 9. In addition, all XY-Differences (relating of course to the first appearing digit) have been marked with a star. The edge clues on the right and bottom are Parity Party clues. And then a few of the digits are also queens, which of course adhere to the anti-queen constraint. It is those digits that are found in the word TEAM, for we must always keep team spirit in mind."

With that, the gnomes have endured their daily exhortations, and apply themselves with a no small amount of relief to their day's work.

Excerpts from the Wichtel Wiki (in German "WiWiWi (Wichtiges Wichtel-Wiki)"):

Digits that obey the anti-queen constraint cannot 'see' an identical digit along any diagonal.

XY-Differences: two neighboring cells, where marked, have a difference equal to the first digit in the respective row or column. All possible marks are given.

Parity Party: the clue gives the sum of the first seen digits in that row or column, up to and including the first even OR first odd digit. A one-digit clue may or may not simply be the first seen digit (i.e., the sum of zero odds and one even, or vice versa).

Solution code: Row 5 and column 5, with S for black cells.

Very entertaining, thanks. I'm quite fond of both XY-Differences and Parity Party and it's nice to see them in a slightly different context :)

Einfach wunderbar.
