Introduction to Compass Fillomino

(Published on 2. April 2021, 08:38 by MagnusJosefsson)

This puzzle is a new variation of Fillomino, inspired by the magnificent Compass Sudoku series by stephane.bura as well as many excellent Fillomino variations by Jesper, spxtr, Mark Sweep and others.

This initial puzzle I am posting is an easier puzzle to let solvers try the concept without too much of a time investment. I have a larger and more challenging puzzle of the same type ready that I will post later if solvers enjoy this one.

Rules

Standard Fillomino rules apply: Divide the grid into regions and enter into each cell the size of its region. No two region of the same size may share an edge.

Compass rules apply: If there is an arrow in a cell, the digit in that cell equals the total number of cells belonging to the region the arrow comes from that are in the direction of the arrow.
It is possible that not all arrows are given.

Example:

The arrow in the cell with the digit 4 indicates that the green region must have a total of exactly 4 cells to the right of the red line.

Very cool introduction! I love how things get forced here.

Think I found this harder than most other solvers, but there was some very clever logic which emerged.

Ironic that I solved this one last. Not a surprise that it felt like a walk in the park with a nice breeze :D

A whole new logic for me here and I'm very excited to try the harder/bigger ones because I liked this introduction very much. I was alrealdy familiar with fillomino, but the compass rule left me disoriented for a few minutes. It's always a joy to discover a new rule and explore its properties with an approchable puzzle. Thanks for setting this.

What a delightful hybrid! Very well-defined logical path with no weird lookaheads. I eagerly look forward to the bigger/harder one, I think it will feel very rewarding if it has a logical path that is as clear as this :)

Thanks PixelPlucker! I am glad you liked the puzzle, and hopefully you will enjoy the follow-up as well :). /Magnus

Wonderful combination of genres! It's crazy, since I also had the idea to combine these puzzle types last weekend, but I had no idea it would exhibit so many cool features. Definitely looking forward to the follow-up.

-----
Thank you, Mark! And wow, that is quite a coincidence. Don't let the fact that I posted one first stop you from making one of your own if you want to. :) /Magnus

This is such a wonderful and natural idea to combine fillomino and compass in this way. I am really looking forward to a follow-up puzzle. Thanks a lot, MagnusJosefsson!

-----
Thank you Phistomefel! Those words mean a lot to me, especially coming from you.
I am planning to post the follow-up puzzle next week. /Magnus

Very interesting concept. The puzzle itself is also very good as an easy introduction.

I suppose this puzzle type can be extremely challenging.

-----
Thank you Dandelo.
Yes, it is possible to make these quite hard while still having a logical path. I am aiming for four stars for the next puzzle. /Magnus
