Sudoku Variants Series (300) - Killer Skyscrapers Sudoku

(Published on 22. December 2020, 22:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants ProjectI have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

When I started thinking of SVS in autumn 2013, I made the first list with a bit over 100 possible variants. Most of those had appeared somewhere earlier in championships or competitions. I still have that very first version of the list and I sometimes take a look at it since not all types have been used yet. One of the unused types was Killer Skyscrapers. During all those years it simply didn't happen to make a Killer Skyscrapers Sudoku. And since I am the inventor of that puzzle type I decided to reserve this one for the #300 jubilee. And here it is.

Killer Skyscrapers Sudoku
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Each digit within the 9x9 region represents a skyscraper of that height. Digits outside this region indicate how many buildings can be seen from that direction, where higher buildings block the view of lower buildings. The small numbers in the upper left corner of the dotted outlined areas indicate the sum of the digits in that area. Within a dotted outlined area all digits must be different.

Inspiration for this type comes from me.

Solve online in Penpa+ (Thx SudokuExplorer!).

Solution code: Row 5, followed by column 4.

I chose this puzzle for my 300th solve on LMD and didn't regret it :-) Very nice puzzle, and I also appreciate the symmetric arrangement of the cages!

This was superbly well made! That middle column gave me a lot of trouble before I decided to take a more sensible path. Thank you Richard! and I certainly learned from it

Congratulations on this milestone in this wonderful series, Richard!
Here's to at least 300 more :)

Thanks!
At every milestone I write that I doubt how far the series will stretch. In this case I am pretty sure that there won't be another 300 different variants with a single ruleset! :)

Congrats!

The 300th puzzle is great. I like all your puzzles very much. I have completed 80% of them. I hope I will continue to work hard to complete the remaining puzzles.

Congrats Richard!

This was a very fun variant, and a good way to ring in 300.

It is recommended to solve the small puzzle first if you are not familiair with killer skyscraper to see how the clue setting might work.
