Sudoku Variants Series (294) - X-Sums Snake Sudoku

(Published on 11. November 2020, 00:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants ProjectI have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

X-Sums Snake Sudoku
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of the digits in a snake with length X, that starts in the first cell next to the clue. X is the digit in that cell. Within each sum all digits must be different. Snakes wriggle horizontally and vertically and don’t touch themselves, not even diagonally. No cell can be part of more than one snake.

Inspiration for this type comes from Willy Wonka.

Solution code: Row 7, followed by column 7.

Even after a year I am still surprised about the difference in insights in the rule-description. In my opinion a snake is a single living animal, not sharing any part of his body with a colleague snake. In that case a snake with limbs, a more-headed serpent or a Siamese snake would be formed. So, as I wrote before, to me it's clear as possible.
But since so many comments are written now, I have added a sentence to the instructions for those who might consider to solve this puzzle in the future.

I was seriously stuck at this puzzle until I went to the original Willy Wonka's puzzle and read its rules. The part that said 'No cell can be a part of more than 1 snake' is absolutely crucial and is not obvious at all. I try not to read comments before I solve a puzzle, so I'm glad that there are a lot of comments about this part of rules.

Thanks for a fun puzzle Richard, great use of the ruleset! Your ability to create puzzles that are very interesting without being insanely difficult always amazes me!

@Willy Wonka: thanks for the kind words. Thank you for the idea; without ideas there would be no SVS! :-)

Well, I think the rule that two snakes must not cross should be added.

I didn’t think of such an addition to the rules because for me it’s as obvious as possible. (Sorry, don’t mean to be rude.)

Correct. I disregarded this rule and then found around 1000 solutions.

I think, you have to add the rule "No cell can be a part of more than 1 snake." :-)

Fun solve and fairly easy! :-)
