Sudoku Variants Series (290) - Product Ltd Sudoku

(Published on 14. October 2020, 00:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Product Ltd Sudoku
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Clues outside the grid indicate how many times the product of digits in two adjacent cells in the respective row or column exceeds 31.

Inspiration for this type comes from BoaConstructor.

Solve online in Penpa (Thx SudokuExplorer) or in F-Puzzles (Thx glum_hippo!)

Solution code: Row 9, followed by column 4.

@Richard, sorry, but I am still not sure what does 'exceeds 31' mean. Is it strict or slack inequality, in other words can these products be 31 or not?
---
Hi Nick, exceeds is 'more than', but since 31 is a prime number, the products that we are looking for here are minimal 32 anyway.
--
@Richard, thanks. I'm feeling slightly embarassed that I didn't think about 31 being a prime number (facepalm).
---
By the looks of it you have still forgotten to enter the solution code! ;-)
---
@Richard, no way I would forget to enter the solution code for my first 5-star puzzle :) It took me a lot of effort to tackle this one.
---
@Nick: Congratulations! Up to the next one!
Slowly closing the gap...

Great fun!

Loved the puzzle! There isn't really ambiguity because "exceed" is strict inequality, but to completely foreclose the possibility of misunderstanding, you could also phrase the rule as exceeds 31.

Definitely one of the hardest of the series.

Wonderful! The logic was more challenging, but it helped to treat it like a hidden whispers sudoku (where you need to draw in the whispers (line between orthogonal cells with large products)).

Here's a penpa+ link: https://tinyurl.com/y35s3z87

If anyone wants to try a hidden whispers sudoku, take a look at the puzzle with id=0003XL

@marcmees: thanks for the feedback, but T&E is absolutely not necessary! This puzzle can be solved by logic alone.

Bedankt ... wel niet zo eenvoudig. Ik beken dat ik op een bepaald punt ben moeten overgaan op een T&E.

Ik twijfel er niet aan dat er een logische weg is ... maar ik ben die even kwijtgeraakt. Het is me hopelijk vergeven.
