Incompletely excaved
During excavations archaeologists have found relics of an subterranean transporting system, whose purpose stays unclear. Apparently it was used for carriage to another transporting system which - so the opinion of the experts - has never been activated.
Following the speculations of the specialists, the documentation of this system was done very thoroughly. A lot of small round reflecting discs has been found and these are interpreted as information carriers, but their functionality has not been figured out so far.
Following the few evaluable hints, the subterranean part was confined by a closed wall. Apparently numbers mark the number of used wall segments.
The overground and around the wall placed parts seem to have been subdivided completely in letter-shaped-areas of size 5; and this without areas of the same shape touching anywhere orthogonally.
Solution code: The diagonal from top right to bottom left; letters for Pentominoes (see Pentominoes); 0 for empty cell, 1 for straightforward, 2 for corner, 3 for branch, 4 for crossing

Dürfen Buchstaben auch in Felder mit Zahlen geschrieben werden? Wenn nicht, muss ja jedes Feld mit Zahl innerhalb der Mauer sein, was mir aber leider direkt von Beginn an Probleme bereitet...?

to 1.: They refer to the fences (slither link) part of the puzzle and in the instruction the sentence "Apparently numbers mark the number of used wall segments.".
to 2.: The subterranean part is one coherent area and the other part on the other side of the wall is holelessly filled with Pentominoes.

Question:
1. What do the numbers inside the board stand for?

2. "subterranean part was confined by a closed wall" Should it be holeless (all pentominoes should be connected to the border)?
