Thermo Windoku

(Published on 22. July 2020, 02:02 by Willy Wonka)

While constructing this puzzle I was unaware of the pattern produced by these extra regions and thought I had created something new.

Despite this logic not being new, I think it is still an interesting puzzle to attempt with the thermometer constraints!

If you are unfamiliar with the patterns of this kind of grid, it may be a little trickier to figure out... but I did it so I think you can too!

However, if you know what to look for, this serves as a great coffee break puzzle (probably more of a 2 star difficultly).

Rules:

- Standard Sudoku rules apply, digits 1-9 appear in each row, column and box.

- Numbers strictly increase along thermometer shapes from the bulb end.

- Each of the outlined extra-regions contain the numbers 1-9.

@GuessIt and others needing a hint (potential spoiler below):

I recommend taking a look at this CTC video about Windokus:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBYYh0Uh_lY

Then ask yourself questions like where can 1 go in this region? Where can 9 go in this region, etc. Every time you find something, update as many pencil marks as you can, rinse and repeat. Enjoy.

@Narayana I was probably being a bit harsh not providing a hint to those struggling... thank you for linking this video!

Thanks so much for the hint to consider patterns for this kind of grid -- that made this possible -- but still not easy. Enjoyed scrambling around thinking "Ok, now where did that unlock something?"

That was quite taxing, but very satisfying!

I have tried this for hours in multiple attempts already and although I found out some nice logical paths, I was not able to solve this. Yet I want to mention that I enjoy this a lot, since I can't vote to show it without successfully solving it.

@Willy Wonka
Wow! The interaction of the thermos with those regions was so stunning! My jaws are still on the floor!

This is one of those sudokus perfect for CTC because it has so many teachable moments!

Nice one. Good interaction between both special rules.
