Uncertain Sudoku #5 - Sum or Average Arrow Sudoku

(Published on 24. March 2020, 17:00 by Feadoor)

Uncertainty

I have prepared a set of 10 puzzles following the common theme of "Uncertainty". I am releasing the puzzles here on a daily basis, but if you are impatient, the full set can be found at this link. Each puzzle is a combination of two variants, but it is unknown in which parts of the grid each variant applies - that is to be determined during solving.

General Rules: Place a digit from 1-9 into each cell of the grid so that every row, column and outlined 3x3 region contains each digit exactly once.

Sum Arrow: Digits placed in a circle must be equal to the sum of the digits along the adjoining arrow.

Average Arrow: Digits placed in a circle must be equal to the average of the digits along the adjoining arrow.

Combination Rule: In this puzzle, each arrow follows either Sum Arrow Sudoku rules, or Average Arrow Sudoku rules.

Solution code: Row 9, followed by Column 2

We have this discussion again and again. When setting up the portal, nobody knew that almost all ratings would be between 'nice' and 'very nice'. Now it would be better to have more than 2 options in this range. But it wouldn't be easy to change it, since then the old votes wouldn't suit to the new system anymore.

I think the main problem is, that the second highest vote is already considered as a bad vote...

Don't worry, the rating system has some serious flaws, but it's hard to come up with something better after 12 years of puzzle portal. The only thing that might be true is that puzzles from 97%-100% are usually more spectacular than something from 85%-90%. And everything around 75% or lower might have a serious flaw somewhere (and that includes things like people can't read their printout because dark colours were overused). And even to that rule there are exceptions. You can see all individual votings for a puzzle on the statistics page (without names of course), so you might see that even for the "bad" puzzles under 90%, most votes are "very nice". If you only have five points on the scale, "nice" is already a 75% vote.

@Feadoor: I have a bit more experience in surprising myself about ratings, and than mainly the beauty-ratings.
Be aware of at least two circumstances:
1. Not all players in the portal like sudokus (that much). Strange enough they still feel the need to solve sudoku puzzles instead; some kind of urge to solve everything that is offered. For those players 'average' or 'nice' is the best rating that you can get, no matter how beautiful your puzzle is, or how nice the solving path is.
2. Some player don't find the logic that you put in your puzzle, they need to guess (unnecessary), and give a (very)low rating, since guessing doesn't add to the solving fun.

For what it's worth: I think you are making fantastic, well thought puzzles and looking to the ratings (that make jealous BTW :-)) most players think the same.

And 89% is still closer to the highest rating (100%) than the 2nd highest (75%), that solvers can choose.

@Feadoor: Don't worry, I loved this one. The whole solve was a delight to me.

It's interesting to me to see the difference between my own evaluations of these puzzles and the opinions of solvers here. This one was one of my own personal favourites.
