To Christmas 2018 some eager puzzlefriends have again arranged a group in which everybody had to make anonymously a puzzle for someone else. These puzzles are now presented one after the other here in the portal.

The historic Rätselhausen

Dear annalist,

not only this year you have supported Santa Claus in his puzzle making. To express my deepest gratitude for this, I allow me to accord a puzzle to you. I'd not have to point this out, but it refers to the topic of my small present: In former times my writing surely would have reached you via the postal and thus more personal way. What I send you is a historic and more than 100 years old city map of our beautiful Rätselhausen. Already in those days the houses and parks were arranged in square form, with the house numbers from 0 to 9 in each house row and column, whereat a 0 stood for a park. This is here not specifically important - which is by the way as well true for the fact that the citizens used to change their houses on a yearly bases just as down to the present day. But in the former days in each row and column - no matter if at a house or park - at exactly three house numbers there were post boxes. If you blacken the positions of this post boxes - and only these! -, the outer numbers represent the sums of the thereby generated white house number blocks in the right order (I've been free enough as to replace some digits by question marks.). And if you follow the given spiral from the start top left, the sequence 0123456789 repeats itself on all blackened house numbers a few times. I sincerely hope, this gives you pleasure and remain hereby with best compliments
