Wichtel 2015 (1): Illuminating Twilight

(Published on 10. March 2016, 10:52 by wichtel)

To Christmas 2015 some eager puzzlefriends have again arranged a group in which everybody had to make anonymously a puzzle for someone else. These puzzles are now presented one after the other here in the portal.

Two persons from two different worlds; they sat together in a foreign land, the first time to christmas. All was new and they shared the passion for puzzles.

"Mathematics is universal", said the first. "That's what brought us together."

"Let us celebrate this", uttered the other one, "and let's join two puzzles. Fences should be one of them. It shall symbolize our two journeys and our hopes for a new beginning."

"Yet our paths were exhausting", said his friend. "The hints for the edges are not always correct and simple. Sometimes they are wrong, always by one."

"And the other puzzle shall tell us, which hints are slightly off target. It shall have the same size, and where it is black, the fences are correct; where there is white, the fences are by one too big or one too small."

"Then let's make a Twilight Tapa", his friend agreed to the proposal. "Thus in the beginning no cell is determined to one color."

"Yes, that's what we do, a regular Twilight Tapa only with correct hints. Then we have two puzzles, that are not unique alone, that cannot exist on their own. But together they enable a solution."

"And in order to orientate oneself better, we shade two lines", his friend concluded their conversation before they started their collective creation being aware, that black and white unite to grey, that in the twilight things are only vaguely recognizable and there are no simple answers at all.

Solution code: For every row of the Tapa from top to bottom the length of the longest black block and clockwise the sizes of the areas outside the loop, beginning in the upper left corner.
