Wichtel 2014 (5): Spannungsvolle Bescherung

(Published on 19. February 2015, 12:40 by wichtel)

To Christmas 2014 some eager puzzlefriends have again arranged a group in which everybody had to make anonymously a puzzle for someone else. These puzzles are now presented one after the other here in the portal.

X-citing X-Mas

I t's Christmas Eve before Christmas Day,
the tree is covered with lights.
Wondering 'bout the positions they stay?
I dreamed them in the nights.

S LALOMlike the cable is going
beyond the needles, the pattern following.
At the green it's the splits doing.
The only touch, otherwise no glowing.

F rom the border up to the star
MASYU is the name of the loop.
The rules are changing what they are -
a LASER will end the coup.

T he puzzles here are standard kind,
             though twice they are connected.
Touching points have a special mind:
             the path is badly reflected.

         D iagonally the LASER goes,
             but in the MASYU interested,
which stays on the lines of monominoes.
Two different souls never touch, n.e.d.!

M irror or not, black or white,
all part of LASER or MASYU.
The message I tell maybe does hide:
             MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU!!!

Solution code:

B eside the path in increasing order
and touching the Masyu count the cells
but stay in the tree - don't cross the border.
Until next year to the sound of "Jingle Bells"!

English summary: There is only one blue area in this puzzle. In the above diagram the hints from the blue area are omitted so they can be distinguished from the other hints and don't collide with them.

OK, thanks. In a situation such as this, the connotation is as important as the denotation, and a word like "badly" can connote several different things in different contexts. The weakness of a dictionary is, of course, that it translates one word at a time, losing most of the connotation. But this is life! Badly, by the way, was just a very small example. A literal reading would mean that electricity may not flow across the connection, or may do so only sporadically, or may cause a fire...

If I end up figuring out what is meant, perhaps I can make some suggestions on the translation.

For example, in lieu of "At the green it's the splits doing" you may want to write "At the green, splits are showing" (as the former sentence doesn't make sense, and "doing" doesn't rhyme with "going")...which is still not quite right as you mean the green/blue border I think, but it needs to fit in the meter.

Hopefully it's obvious, but I'm only spending time on this because it is cool and ambitious!

PS - If you reply inside my hidden comment, I can see it.

RALehrer, your hidden comment is impressive too :). rob pointed out the main aspects very well. I try to give some more details without making it too clear. I leave some of your questions unanswered and so I can keep my answer unhidden:

The split of the cable is not IN the green area but AT the green area.
In stanza 3 I read in German and English practically the same.
Stanza 4: In German it's "Übergänge", so there is more than one connection, and "badly" is what my German/English dictionary says that it is.

Conclusion: Forget the google translation.

The official translation is fine. (Which doesn't mean that your reading of it is necessarily correct in all details, but there's similar vagueness in the original German instructions.)

sorry - which of the two English translations are you referring to as fine - as they appear to contradict each other - e.g., one says it splits in the green area, the other says that there's only one route to the green area.

Google Translate seems to have trouble with poetry. The English translation looks fine to me, and no less vague than the German original.

When I use a translator from the German, I get something very different than the "official" English translation. I know you were trying to make it rhyme in both languages, which is quite difficult, and quite impressive, but it seems the rules end up being different?

I'll reproduce what Google has here, and then ask questions in hidden.

It's the night before Christmas,
              only lights decorate the tree.
              The way they mounted,
              encounters' me in a dream.

         In SLALOM cables hanging runs,
              under branches and compliant,
on the tree but it makes balancing act
exactly one route to the green is the norm.

From the border up to the star
              'Corresponds nem Masyu the trail.
The property is to change that -
as he LASER breaks from there.

         Each very standard for themselves,
              the transitions only partially,
              obey the rules of casual
and soon the solution you succeed.

         The LASER is diagonal,
              off the Masyu horizontally.
              Two beings connected not orthogonal,
so the angle is not right.

Mirror or no, black or white,
a binding 'them with LASER and Masyu.
It remains to how it's the saying goes,
              MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU !!!

Huch, ja nee, danke für den Hinweis! Neues Bild hochgeladen. In der ersten Version war beim oberen blauen Bereich ohne die Slalomvorgaben das Stromkabel falsch angeschlossen.

New diagram; in the first version one cable connection was wrong.

Ist es richtig, dass das Kabel im unteren Bild zwischen der 4/5 zur Dose abzweigt und im oberen Bild zwischen der 3/4 Zeile?
