Double Dutch Sudoku Advent (18) - Outside vs. Clocks

(Published on 18. December 2014, 12:00 by Eisbär)

Richard and I have created a fresh sudoku advent calendar in which we combine a well known variant with a relatively unknown variant every day. Combining variants leads to interesting and surprising new solving techniques.

Logically solvable
All puzzles can be solved completely logically although the logic is sometimes well hidden and is inherent to the combination of restrictions that the different types offer. For that reason we have written some solving hints for most of the puzzles, published in a very tiny font. If you want to read the hints, simply copy these in a text editor and enlarge the font size.

Outside
Place the digits from 1 to 9 in every row, column and 3x3-block. Digits outside the grid have to be placed in one of the first three cells in the corresponding row or column.

Clocks
There are some digital clocks placed in the grid. All clocks should display a valid time in 24-hour format (HH:MM); i.e. a clock can display 23:58 but not 32:85 etc.

Solving hints

R9C7 = 8
R4C6 = 1; R4C8 = 3; R6C1 = 1; R6C3 = 4
R5C3 = 6; R8C2 = 6; R1C2 = 7; R1C1 = 8; R4C3 = 7; R6C7 = 7
Since the first digit of each clock is 1 or 2, there are pairs {12} in C3, C4, block top middle, block bottom left
R23C3 = pair {35}; R7C3 = 8; R9C3 = 9; R7C2 = 1; Some first digits of clocks can be placed
R8C4 = 3; R7C4 = 5
3 in block top middle either in R2C5 or in R3C6. R1C5 + R2C6 is pair {45}
R1C4 = 6; R1C6 = 9

Solution code: Row 2, followed by Row 7

According to me this is indeed my easiest puzzle in this Advent... hope you liked it though!

On the other hand this one is a bit special since this is my 50th puzzle published in the portal :-D
