This puzzle is the third puzzle in a series called "Cards on the table". If this is your first time playing a puzzle from this series, you can click here to play the first puzzle. It is intended that you play the series in the correct order and engage with it's narrative along the way. Otherwise, you will not be able to reach the end. You can still play the puzzles in whatever order you'd like, and you don't have to understand the story to complete them, except for the finale. The story is delivered in halves, the first half being here on LMD, and the other half can be found by copying the pastebin link shown on Sudokupad when the puzzle is solved.

The next puzzle, Perfect Heart, will release soon!

To Dawn,

Hey! I've got a serious political update for you.

Things are really bad here in Exaral. Word has gotten out about the royal wedding and the fact that there, well, WASN'T a royal wedding last week. My parents are pissed about the whole thing. Luckily, no one suspects that I may or may not know anything about your antics. And in case this needs to be said, I'm obviously not going to tell anyone where you are or what name you're using. Seriously… 'Dawn Brooks Taylor'… I give you a 2/10 in creativity for that one. Veryy subtle -_-

I haven't had to fake being worried about you or anything because I AM legitimately worried. It's good to know you are okay, but the world can be so dangerous, especially with the whole kingdom up in arms looking for you.

With that said, my parents have decided to send me to Talaros as an envoy. Apparently it's to 'maintain a good business relationship', but really it's so I can grovel to your parents about 'compensation' for losing you. I am NOT looking forward to that conversation, to say the least. Either way, I'm going to be in town soon and I would really like it if we could meet up. If we are going to meet up I'm also going to need a 'totally real' name. How about 'Sam Xavier' or something? See what I did there?

Look, I really don't know how to feel about your decision right now. Safe to say the last week has been… extremely complicated. The people have started whispering terrible things about you, especially since it was clear to everyone that running away was your own choice. My parents… well I'd rather not repeat what they've said. I listen to their words and I feel very conflicted. I don't blame you for running away from it all, not for a second, but would staying with me really have been the worst thing in the world? I know you trust me, but every time I catch a whisper here and there of gossip related to your 'choice'… well, I don't know. Who am I kidding, you're going through a much more stressful time than me. I shouldn't be airing out all of my baggage like this. It's just, you've made this big decision all on your own, and I guess it's hit me a lot harder than I expected. It's probably just me worrying too much again. I hope it's okay that I can admit that to you as your friend. That being said, it's too late to turn back now, so I'm going to help you however I can.

Please stay safe. I'll be in touch.

Sam

Rules:

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Box borders divide blue region sum lines into segments, where each segment has the same sum when summing the values of the digits.

A digit in a club, x, has a value of -x. i.e digits in clubs should be subtracted from a segment rather than added when computing the total.

Where a black dot sits between two cells, one digit is double the other. Not all dots are necessarily given.

To avoid confusion, overlapping lines are distinct from each other, with slightly different colours showing which line is which.

Things are heating up, Perfect Heart and Cards on the Table will be released very close to one another. So we are almost done!

This is a more approachable and less taxing way of using negator cells, instead of the usual deducing a disjoint set ex nihilo. The region sums tend to have several degrees of freedom and take rather a lot of sudoku to whittle down— not necessarily a bad thing in a sudoku! But definitely leaning classic.

Nice puzzle! Thanks for sharing, James.

I'm hoping to release the next puzzle this week, but I've still got some writing to do!

I really like the storytelling of both perspectives, seeing how both characters are reacting to their own situation and their differing thoughts. Also another nice suit constraint, thank you! :)
