Quadrank Arrows

(Eingestellt am 17. September 2025, 01:53 Uhr von phil_the)

This is the second of a pair of puzzles written for Scojo's 'Impostor Prompt'. For this challenge we had one week to create a puzzle typical of our own style. Then in the second week another puzzle in the style of a randomly chosen participant. Scojo then solves every pair of puzzle live on his Twitch stream and he & chat vote on which they think is the real puzzle from the pair and which is the imposter puzzle.

solve in Sudokupad

Normal Sudoku Rules Apply.

QUADRANK ARROWS:

• Each circle has a value which is a 4-digit number and which must be a valid quad clue. The four digits are in ascending order but may include repeats. Each of the four digits in the clue appears the same number of times in the surrounding 4 cells.

• Assign each circle a rank according to its value's position in a list of the all of the circles' values but ignoring any repeated values. i.e. clues with the same value have the same rank. Place each circle's rank into the cell at the tip of the arrow emerging from that circle.

KILLER CAGES:

Digits in a cage sum to the given total.

I never really expected to fool people but I was able to produce something inspired by the style of the person I was assigned to impersonate. Here is their puzzle.

Lösungscode: value of the second highest ranked quad

Really fun and original ruleset!

Great puzzle!! One part of the rules was unclear to me:

Instead of:
> Assign each circle a rank according to its value's position in a list of the all of the circles' values but ignoring any repeated values. i.e. clues with the same value have the same rank.

I would write:

> Rank all the circles according to their values. The lowest value (e.g. 1111) gets the smallest rank, and the highest value gets the highest rank. Equal values get the same rank. The ranking is lexicographic order of the sorted values in the circle, e.g. 1 1 9 9 is before 1 2 3 4.

The particular thing that confused me is that the rules say "ignoring any repeated values" and I took it to mean that 1 1 9 9 counts like 1 9 (and is therefore after 1 2 3 4), while in fact 1 1 9 9 is before 1 2 3 4.

Thank you for a great puzzle!!

While I knew the rules, the fact that there is an arrow which doesn't really do anything (excl. the tip) was a bit confusing.

Outside of that, this was just such a beautiful puzzle. The ruleset made me question myself throughout the solve, but was so glad to see that I'd been on the correct path all along.

Completely new constant type for me, and this was an excellent and approachable intro to it.

Very fun, thanks!

I liked this concept very much, but it was not worth 4 stars, 2(-3) I would say.
